Announcement: 27 September 2008

As many of you may know, Facebook's new layout is here to stay. Consequently, the Boost you know and love needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. As we're a small team, it may take a few weeks to get all the features back up. Whenever we get features released though, your Boost will update itself and you'll be able to get back to Boosting as usual.

Please note that if you're having trouble with Facebook loading or freezing, disable features labeled '(beta)'.

Announcement: 20 July 2008

For those new to Boost 8.0.*, please note that Boost is now fully compatible with the Facebook Toolbar, which now has Auto-Login, sidebar and all the features of the Boost Toolbar you know and love. If you used the Boost toolbar, install it alongside here:

http://developers.facebook .com/toolbar/

lots of features have changed in the 8.0.* version of Boost, so check it out and please contact us with any questions or concerns.

I don't want to add Boost to my application list. Can I still use the features?
- You only need to be logged into facebook to use the 'Boost Toolbar' features. To login, click on the 'Login to Facebook' button on your toolbar

I don't like the toolbar; how do I get rid of it?
- To hide the 'Boost Toolbar', simply right click on your toolbar and uncheck ‘Boost Toolbar’. Also, if you would not like to recieve notifications, make sure you disable the 'Auto-Login for Toolbar' option in the Boost Settings window.

The toolbar is gone! Where did it go?
- To show the 'Boost Toolbar', simply right click on your toolbar and check 'Boost Toolbar'

How do I uninstall Boost?

- You can uninstall Boost by going to Tools->Add-ons (in Firefox 2.0.*) and clicking "Uninstall" for the Boost Extension.

Boost is not working properly... what can I do?

- Boost may conflict with certain extensions. Currently, it is known to have some issues with Facebook Toolbar and Gmail Manager. We're working on this. To see if an extension conflict is causing Boost to work improperly, disable all other extensions (go to Tools->Add-ons (in Firefox 2.0.*) and clicking "Disable" for other extensions) and restart firefox. If Boost works properly after restart, then another firefox extension was conflicting with it. please contact us and let us know what it is, and we'll sort out the issue.

I don't want to use certain features. Can I choose which features to enable?
- Yes! To toggle which features you want to enable at any time, click on the logo in the bottom-right corner of your browser window.

Where can I change my Boost Settings?
- Click on the boost logo in the bottom right hand corner of your firefox browser or click on the "Shortcuts" drop down menu on the toolbar and then choose "Boost Settings". An options window should show up called "StudioLD Boost Options".

How can I zoom on pictures?
- press '+' or '-' after clicking on a picture in an album with the old Boost album viewer enabled.

How do I view more albums?
- go to a photo tagged of a friend in an album of someone who's not your friend, then press 'view photo in album

I can't log into Boost toolbar since the 5.* update! What gives?
- First of all, we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused a handful of users who upgraded from a pre-5.3.1 release of Boost. The source of the problem could be a number of issues, so instead of going through them just try the following:

The fix:
If you're still having login problems with Boost, we've narrowed down the problem group to those who have upgraded from previous versions. We have come up with two possible fixes. Method 1 should work without fail, Method 2 will work for some users.

1- the simple, blow-up way: create a new firefox profile and reinstall boost (as well as your other addons, passwords, extensions, etc.):
instructions on how to do this can be found here:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile

2- the slightly more complicated, less destructive way:
go to "about:config" in your browser and RESET any preference with "studiold" in the name (filter for this). then uninstall boost, and then reinstall it again.
further instructions can be found here:
http://mozilla.gunnars.net/mozilla_howto_aboutconfig.html

I get an error updating my status. What could be wrong?

  1. go to "about:config" in a new window of firefox
  2. filter out for "lastSubDomain" - you should have some preference called "studioldfaceliftbasic.lastSubdomain" -> make sure it is 'user set' and its value is the subdomain of your facebook. for example, my network is utexas because my fb pages look like "http://utexas.facebook.com/home.php", so the value of my "studioldfaceliftbasic.lastSubdomain" field is "utexas.".
  3. you can manually set this to your subdomain (right click and choose modify) or just go to your fb homepage for it to set itself. if your subDomain to facebook is "www." then you'll have to wait for the next release, as this subdomain was not supported in the 5.5.14 release.

Pressing "Login to Facebook" or "Boost to Facebook" on my toolbar doesn't do anything. What gives?

  1. disable the 'Auto-Login for Toolbar' option in the boost settings menu
  2. make sure the Boost toolbar is visible in your browser (if it's not, right click on a toolbar and check 'Boost toolbar')
  3. click the 'Boost to Facebook' or 'Login to Facebook' button on the top-right hand side of your toolbar
  4. make sure you check the "save my login info" option when you login to facebook in the popup window
  5. now enable the 'Auto-Login for Toolbar' option from the boost settings menu

Man, are those pop-notifications annoying. Can I make them stop?
- Certainly. Just go to the 'Toolbar Settings' tab in the 'Boost Settings' window, and uncheck the 'Enable Pop-up Notifications' option

Rollover All Pics (or some other feature) doesn't work on all pages... why?
- This could be for a number of reasons. First, make sure that you have disabled all features marked 'beta' as they may not be fully compatible with other features. Also, ensure you have javascript enabled for Firefox. Then, make sure you have the most updated version of boost. If you still are having issues, feel free to contact us.

Why do the toolbar menus open links in a new window and not a tab?
- We're working on that right now, but until the fix is pushed, you can middle click or ctrl-click (hold control and click) to get any of the links in the toolbar to open in a tab instead of a new window.

I'm having trouble enabling/disabling skins. help!
- Make sure you have the boost extension installed. then, click on the boost icon in the bottom right hand corner of your browser to open up the "StudioLD Boost Options" window. Select the "Skins" tab and then find the skin you wish to enable in the "Preloaded Skins" dropdown menu. Hit 'OK' to save your changes. Now open up any page in facebook and your skin should be ready to go!

Where do I go to change my skins?
- To enable and choose different skins, first open the 'Boost Settings' window. In this window, click on the 'Skins' tab and then choose the skin you would like to use from the dropdown menu. No skin is the 'default' skin.

I don't see any pop-up notifications. Do I need to disable my pop-up blocker?
The notification windows are not actually pop-up windows, so standard pop-up blockers should not affect them. Make sure the notifications are enabled ("StudioLD Boost Settings" window -> "Toolbar Settings" tab) and log in to facebook using the Boost Toolbar. If it still doesn't work, let us know.

Boost BROKE after it upgraded itself! What do I do?
- Though we try to test as extensively as we can, our team is very small and it is difficult for us to test on all possible systems and platforms. I think Boost is slowing down my computer/firefox/pageloads/love life. Can you please give me some insight or advice about this?

- the simple answer:
if you disable the toolbar, Boost is invisible (won't affect any speeds) and if you enable it then your firefox startup time will be about a second slower.

- the long answer:
When you open firefox, Boost checks to see if you have 'auto-toolbar login' enabled. if you do, it logs you into facebook for the Boost toolbar. this queries the facebook server for information about you, the most significant of which is your friend list and their updates. this is why, if you have auto-login to toolbar enabled, the startup time for firefox is a little slower (depending on the number of friends you have) as you must query the facebook servers first.

So let's say you do not want to use the toolbar at all. will this slow down your computer, firefox, or facebook/website browsing? To answer that simply - no, it won't. You need only disable 'auto-login to toolbar' and hide the toolbar (right click on the toolbar and uncheck 'Boost toolbar'). With these options enabled, the skins and other features of Boost will be available without ever interacting with or enabling the toolbar. this means NO ram usage by the toolbar.

However, you will note, with all versions of Boost since 2.0, that the startup time for your firefox browser with Boost installed is increased anywhere from 0.2-1 seconds, depending on your computer. you can run diagnostics on your computer checking the task manager and running mozilla firefox with the console to verify this.

We do not give users globally an option to disable the toolbar completely because this could possibly create confusion and unneeded hassle and questions through the user-base. instead, if you would prefer not to use the toolbar, just follow the aforementioned steps and you should see no change in firefox's performance. Also, on a related note, the features on firefox do not rely on our servers and are therefore dependent only on facebook servers (how fast they load your pages to you, or send your toolbar notifications) and your local computer (how fast it can run local javascript loaded from your machine).

and basically, since we release often, we'd have to disassemble each release to create a second standalone version without the toolbar. if you would like, you can use a previous version, found here. i'd recommend anything 3.* and below. hope that answers any performancing questions. if you're still concerned with performance that Boost is reducing i can help you benchmark your system to see exactly what Boost is draining. (special thanks to spursdude for bringing this concern to our attention)

- Boost will automatically be updated by Firefox periodically. You can check for updated by going to Tools->Add-ons (in Firefox 2.0.*) and click "Find Updates"

What happened to FaceLift? Why the logo and name change?

-Facebook trademark requires that any application name not use 'face' or any derivative of the word 'face'. therefore, a makeover was in order and 'Boost' was reborn. The older versions can be found here, but unfortunately are no longer supported. However, 'boost' is simply a better looking skin for the same product.

My question still has not been answered... what now?
